Stance, hand placement, and proper weight shifting is key to a basic beginning and Coach Blasi shares a series of excellent drills designed to reinforce them all! The two-hand drill is a basic stick handling drill that is accomplished by rolling the wrist; a progression is the one-hand/two hand drill. Weight shifting is important in the 'short dribbles/wide sweeps' drill. The 'around the world' drill develops the bottom hand as it shifts around the stick. The 'figure eights' drill is similar and demands focus, balance and stick work. Weight shifting and rolling hands are key in the wide sweeps series. Cones can be used on the ice to create excellent drills. Puck handling control is the objective of the straddling the cones drill. Other cone drills include the short dribble/wide sweep drill, head fake drill, tight turns and tight turns box drill. In addition, Blasi shares his key points for puck control and stick handling and the common problems associated with stick handling.

 | Enrico Blasi: Becoming a Champion Hockey Player: Offensive Essentials for Passing, Receiving Shooting (DVD) Brand: Championship Productions Model: HD-2885B Part Number: HD-2885B with Enrico Blasi,
Miami of Ohio Head Coach,
2006 National Coach of the Year,
3X CCHA "Coach of the Year"
Passing and receiving skills cannot be underestimated and must always be improved upon! When delivering the puck, Coach Blasi teaches a sweeping motion, with weight shift, and a follow through with the stick. Keeping your head up, hands away from the body and follow through to target are keys to proper passing. Blasi's keys to receiving the puck include transferring weight from front to back, stick on ice to present a target, cushion the pass and soft hands. Keys to the backhand pass include puck in the middle of the blade, sweeping motion to the target and hands away from the body. The flip pass also requires a good follow through. A chopping motion and a short, abbreviated follow through will result in proper flip passing. Blasi demonstrates stationary passing drills such as the forehand pass and the flip pass drill. Other drills include partner passing, follow the pass drill, forward/backward drill, wide and narrow angle passing drill, circle drill, partner cone drill, tight turns box drill, and flip pass drill. Blasi includes keys for the proper slap shot, wrist shot, snap shot and backhand shot, which are also demonstrated in stationary and moving shooting drills.

 | Enrico Blasi: Becoming a Champion Hockey Player: Angling, Body Checking Puck Protection (DVD) Brand: Championship Productions Model: HD-2885C Part Number: HD-2885C with Enrico Blasi,
Miami of Ohio Head Coach,
2006 National Coach of the Year,
3X CCHA "Coach of the Year"
Coach Blasi presents some of the finer points of hockey that give players and teams the edge needed for success. Blasi begins by discussing angling techniques for driving the puck carrier to the side. He teaches players to be stick on stick and body on body, with hand down to separate the man from the puck. Body checking takes good technique and execution. Players must be in good athletic position with the stick down and in control. When taking the hit, you should continue moving with your knees bent. Embracing the hit by using the hands and arms will soften the blow. Drills for angling and body checking include the angling wall drill with four drill variations, the shoulder check drill. Puck protection is an essential part of hockey. Key points are keeping your body between the puck and your opponent, keep your head up with knees bent, and use arms and hips to shield your opponent from the puck. The one-on-one keep away is an excellent drill to develop balancing skill. All five puck protection drills shown will help increase your puck protection skills!

Miami of Ohio Assistant Strength Coach;
former defenseman for the Redhawks
Coach Cady begins with the squat jump, an important exercise in this strength program. Hip drive creates the biggest benefit from this exercise. The lateral lunge builds lateral strength and flexibility in the hips and the groin area. The crossover step up utilizes the box as a landing area. Hip strength and flexibility are gained with the hip lift. This lift includes several variations for differing results. Chest strength and shoulder mobility result from correct execution of the medicine ball push-ups. The shoulder circuit is a series of nine exercises that include the front raise, shoulder press, upright row and the iron cross. The speed and agility training begins with the tuck jump with push in the air. On the basketball floor, the mirror cone drill uses seven cones and two players. Additional agility drills include figure-eight chase, skater bounds drill, Heiden stick and the Icky shuffle with variations. A recap of all exercises includes common problems as well as correct and incorrect execution of each drill.
