Now we have the sequel, and it's not at all nice, either. The immediate attraction to Jet Moto 2 lies in the variety of tracks offered. The original stuck mostly to a safe compilation of sand, sea, and snow-based courses, which is fine, but didn't give much room for creativity. And while its follow-up does feature its fair share of deserts and mountainsides, it does so with extreme and creative touches: A remote desert location leads up the side of a lava-spewing volcano, and the lava really does hurt. The level Aftershock takes you from a wreckage-filled ocean into the remains of a toxic, quake-ridden Los Angeles. And Rollercide leads you along the tracks of a demented carnival's roller coaster. By far the most insane of this berserk cocktail is Nebulous, the demonically difficult finale that guides you through the heavens and into? well, you'll see. These bizarre levels take the Jet Moto series yet another step away from the traditional racer and are rescued from the threat of "gimmickiness" by the perverse and detailed humor that SingleTrac so deftly displayed in its awesome Twisted Metal series. | *$26.30 |

This James Bond adventure needs a bit more shaking and stirring before it can be a standout among the current breed of console shooters. It's not that IThe World Is Not Enough/I is an awful game--it just seems that the world's favorite superspy, despite his many gadgets and guns, just doesn't compete with recent offerings like IMedal of Honor Underground/I.p 007 isn't known largely for bursting into rooms with guns blazing, mowing down millions of baddies; so, many parts of ITWINE/I require stealth and cunning, instead of an itchy trigger finger. Sadly, most enemies can't shoot straight, and, if you move quickly enough, they'll forget that they ever saw you trying to break into that high-security area.p ITWINE/I features quite a few clips from the movie that keep the story moving along. However, the music features a repetitive, awful remix of the James Bond theme that quickly becomes grating. Fortunately, the highly detailed scenery breathes life into the locales that are featured in the 11 alarmingly short levels of the game.p However, what hurts this game most is its persistently generic gameplay. While the gadgets are cool, the level design is somewhat plain. Also, the enemies and other characters all display a rather bland, uninterested look. The multiplayer element that sold many a copy of IGoldeneye 007/I and IThe World Is Not Enough/I for the Nintendo 64 also is completely absent--a shame.p All in all, you could do a lot worse than help 007 save the world again; but, once you get past the name, music, good looks, and merely decent gameplay, you'll find that ITWINE/I still doesn't offer enough to make it a standout in a crowded genre. As many veteran gamers will attest, movie-based video games usually don't come off all that well--usually because they're thrown together in haste in an attempt to quickly cash in on a hot film license. But X-Men: Mutant Academy is an exception, offering plenty of characters, eye-popping graphics, and solid control as far as fighting games go.
Computer-generated visuals bring 10 X-Men home in their latex comic book costumes, as well as their leather movie duds. In addition to those characters featured in the movie, Mutant Academy also puts Beast and Gambit at players' disposal. (Rogue, however, is a no-show.)
The fighting system for Mutant Academy is built around three special move meters, which can be built up during battle. Once the special meter is filled, you can use your newly acquired moves to perform wild displays of combat skills. Uniquely, the power from one meter can be transferred to another, giving players an added strategic advantage while fighting. The game plays fast and takes skill to master, though it relies more heavily on special moves than combos. Still, it ranks right up there with Capcom's best. --Robb Guido

The IGameDay/I series has been a mainstay on the PlayStation NFL football gaming scene since the system was launched way back in 1995. Since then, the game has grown and evolved while taking pigskin fans into the next level, so to speak. INFL GameDay 2001/Idelivers a total NFL experience for football fans and would be a welcome addition to any library for a number of reasons.p The three main features of the series have been updated nicely. The artificial intelligence of the players has been tweaked, thankfully. The graphics have also been updated, making this game look and play like a probowl linebacker heading for the quarterback on Super Bowl Sunday. Proportioned polygon players along with authentic stadiums, visible wear and tear on the field, and new player celebrations all add up to a touchdown in the graphics department for this game. The sound effects make you feel like you are in the huddle and taking part in real NFL action. Everything from the in-game commentary to the Ithwack/I! of opposing players' pads, to the stadium's chants and music--all pump up the game's fun factor.p One new feature that will help first-time players is the addition of in-game help menus that walk players through specific offensive and defensive formations and teach them about the game. Another new feature that old-school players will like is the "play as any skill" mode that enables you to take control of any player, including a receiver. Once you run your route, you can actually signal the quarterback to throw you the ball! Features like these make INFL GameDay 2001/I an intense NFL action game for the PlayStation.
